Stoke lost their opening league game of the season away to newly promoted Staines. For 60 minutes Stoke were competitive but lost the game in a 20 minute spell mid way through the second half where they conceded 22 points including 3 tries without reply.
It was the home side that started the better with early pressure and missed a penalty after 2 minutes but did open the scoring on 7 minutes with a penalty and a 3-0 lead. The next 20 minutes saw both sides advance into each others 22 but good defence from both teams prevented any scores. Indeed if Stoke had turned pressure into points they could have taken the lead but too often they made simple mistakes that allowed turn over ball and gave Staines the chance to clear their lines.
On the half hour mark Stoke had a line out 15 metres from the try line which resulted in sustained pressure and eventually crossing the line only for the ref to say the ball was held up by the defence. From the resulting scrum the visitors applied more pressure only to give away another turnover and Staines cleared their lines.
On 33 minutes Staines created an overlap just inside the visitors half but could not make use of it as Stokes Smith intercepted to make ground but after several phases the visitors again gave away a turnover as a player was penalised for diving over the top.
Stoke were now starting to get more of the ball and after good hands and re-cycling of the ball it was the home side penalised for killing the ball and had their winger yellow carded. Humberstone (A) converted the difficult kick to level at 3 points all on 38 minutes.
From the kick off Stoke did not catch the ball and allowed Staines to apply pressure. Stoke then regained possession with a free kick which was taken back into the 22 before being kicked to touch and giving the line out to Staines. They won their own ball and after moving the ball into midfield were awarded a penalty which was converted to take a 6-3 lead in added time.
In the 5th minute of added time Lewis collected a kick on his 22 before making ground and releasing Humberstone (T) who made an impressive break up to the 22 before a final pass went to ground leaving the home side still in front.
The second half started with the home side again on top but Stoke did not help themselves as they gave away territory by some poor tactical kicking and were brought back 60 metres for having a man in front of the ball after a good clearance kick.
Good defence from Stoke with Lewis and Humberstone (T) making crucial tackles before the ref gave the home side a penalty 5 metres out for hands in the ruck. The ref duly gave a yellow card and whilst she confessed to not seeing who infringed it was Humberstone (T) was shown it on 52 minutes.
The home side now started to control the game and hit their purple patch with a well worked try from a line out and good hands in midfield to lead 11-6 on 55 minutes. Staines extended this to 14-3 5 minutes later when Stoke gave away a penalty for crossing.
Stoke narrowly missed a long range penalty before Staines again applied pressure. The home side scored 2 converted tries on 70 and 75 minutes both following line outs one from their backs and the other a catch and drive from the forwards to now lead 28-3.
From the resulting re-start it was Stoke who applied pressure and were awarded 3 penalties in succession which they took quickly and made ground with Appleby crossing the line on the 3rd one only for it to be re-taken whilst the ref spoke to their players before repeating his efforts to score and Humberstone (A) and reduce arrears to 28-19 on78 minutes.
With the last move of the game in the 85th minute a scrum to Staines led to the final score when the scrum half saw a gap down the blind side to score out wide and the final score line of 33-10 to the home side.
After head coach Paramore added “After watch the game it has given me something to work on. I thought the 1st half was O.K. and our line out was generally good. We need to communicate better with each other in defence and I think our fitness let us down in the second half. We did not give up as can be seen by our late try which is why I am proud of the players.”
